A New State Government Established In Terengganu
On this day in 1961, His Royal Highness the Sultan of Terengganu, Sultan Ismail Nasiruddin Shah, commanded Mr. Ibrahim Fikri, the Chairman of the Alliance Party, Terengganu Division, to form a new state government. The declaration was made during the swearing-in ceremony of the new state government at Maziah Palace in Kuala Terengganu. His Royal Highness’ action was based on Article 12 (2) (a) and (b) of the Constitution, which allowed him to intervene to form a new government. This was due to the success of the Alliance Party, Terengganu Division, led by Mr. Ibrahim Fikri, in a vote of no confidence against the PAS Government in the Terengganu State Legislative Assembly. In his speech during the swearing-in ceremony, His Royal Highness the Sultan said that he was not in favour of any party in this matter. However, he needed to take into consideration the majority as the country practised democracy. Therefore, in the interest of the administration of the state, he requested for the majority in the state assembly to form a new government. With the formation of the new state government on this day in 1961, the Alliance Party became the ruling party in the state of Terengganu, which was previously under PAS rule.
