Oath Declaration Ceremony Of The National Language At The Merdeka Stadium In Kuala Lumpur
On this day in 1964, the oath declaration ceremony of the National Language took place at the Merdeka Stadium. The ceremony, which was attended by 20,000 people, was held at 5.15pm. Speaking at the Ceremony, the Prime Minister of Malaysia, Tunku Abdul Rahman emphasised that the government would use the National Language fully when the time comes. Besides that, he also emphasised that it was the responsibility and duty of every Federal citizen to use the National Language at all times so that the language could be developed further. Meanwhile, the Chairman of the Central Working Committee for the Language Month, Tuan Syed Nasir, said in his speech that the usage of the National Language widely would free everyone from the feeling of disunity, nonchalance, selfishness and low self-esteem due to the influence of the Colonialist language. The fight to uphold the usage of the National Language was spearheaded and led by the Institute of Language and Linguistics (Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka) during the 1960s through various programmes and activities for all citizens of various ethnic backgrounds in this independent country. These efforts paved the way for the National Language to develop extensively among the people in this country.
