Tun Ghafar Baba was a political leader who identified with the grassroots. He was born on February 18 in Seremban, Negeri Sembilan to a family of very modest means. Abdul Ghaffar Bin Baba was originally named Tran Bin Abdul Baba. The sixth of nine children, he lost his parents when he was 8 years old and was taken in by his uncle. Forced at an early age to support himself, he took on menial jobs, including working as a caddy collecting tennis balls and selling firewood.Tun Ghafar Baba was chosen the second Chief Minister of Melaka when he was 34 years of age. He served in this capacity from June 1, 1959 to October 5, 1967. Melaka flourished under the leadership of Tun Ghafar Baba. He implemented policies to ensure progress in all fields including agriculture, fisheries, education and infrastructure. Tun Ghafar Baba was appointed Chairman of MARA on 1 September 1967 and he held the position for four years. He made many contributions to the advancement of the Malays especially in education and the economy. He mooted the establishment of Institut Teknologi MARA (ITM), to educate Malay children, built up the MARA Transport Company, promoted the Amanah Saham MARA Scheme, established the MARA Study Loan Fund, and provided Bumiputera entrepreneurs with training and capital.Tun Ghafar Baba is regarded as a stabilizing figure in Malaysian politics, and an iconic true blue Malaygrass roots leader. Tun Ghafar Baba was an approachable, moderate leader well-respected and known for his firmness.
