DocumentDescription: GENT INSTALLED: MALAYAN UNION INAUGURATED - A brief twenty minute ceremony in the Council Chamber, today, saw the end of the British Military Administration, the inauguration of the Malayan Union and the installation of Sir Edward Gent, as Governor and Commander in Chief. Large crowds gathered outside the Government Building, the day having been declared a Public Holiday, when the Governor made his first appearance in public to inspect a Guard of Honour of the Bihar Regiment and the gun crews of the 114th Field Regiment, R.A. who later fired the seventeen gun salute. His Excellency was accompanied throughout the inspection by high ranking B.M.A. officers and Lieut. General Sir Frank Messervy, G.O.C.-in-C Malaya Command, who read the proclamation at the installation ceremony which ended the British Military Administration in Malaya. The following day His Excellency and Lieut. General Messervy inspected the Malayan Regiment and the band of the 1st Battalion Royal Scots.
