In 1882, the construction of the first rail track in the Malay States began. The track connected the Larut tin mines with the nearest port, which was Port Weld. The entire construction of the railway track cost £7,000, and was funded by the Perak State Government. The track covered a distance of roughly eight miles, and took four years to complete.On first June 1885, the first rail track in the country from Taiping to Port Weld was officially opened by Sir Hugh Low, the British Resident in Perak. The track signaled the beginnings of modern transportation in the Malay States. The train was also used to transport workers to the mines.
