It was twenty seventh May 1961 in Singapore. The South East Asia Foreign Correspondents Conference was taking place at the Adelphi Hotel. In this speech, Tunku Abdul Rahman Putra, the Prime Minister of the Federation of Malaya, proposed a plan to bring together the Federation, Singapore, Sabah, Brunei and Sarawak into a form of political and economic cooperation.The plan was aimed at curtailing the communist influence that could undermine political stability in the region. It was also intended to enhance economic development, address the demographic imbalance, and hasten the march towards independence in Singapore, Sabah and Sarawak.Malaysia, a new country, was born on sixteenth September 1963. The Declaration of Malaysia was read by the Prime Minister, Tunku Abdul Rahman Putra, who concluded the proclamation with seven cheers of “Merdeka”, alternated by shouts of “Merdeka” from the crowd in attendance. A 101 gun salute was sounded to mark the occasion.
