Sinopsis Video
On 23 February 1967, YAB Tun Abdul Razak, the Prime Minister of Malaysia tabled the Bill and it was passed on March 3, 1967 as the National Language Act 1967, as provided for by Article 152 (1) of the Constitution of Malaysia. The National Language Act 1967 stipulated that Bahasa Melayu would be used as the sole official language in all official transactions in place of English. On 1st September 1967, the Yang diPertuan Agong Tuanku Ismail Nasiruddin Shah ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Zainal Abidin declared Bahasa Melayu as the sole official language of the states in Malaysia. There were four main factors why Bahasa Melayu was chosen as the national language, At the time of Independence, the Reid Commission had proposed that Bahasa Melayu be the national language. The language had always been in use and therefore would not cause difficulties for general communication among the people. The language had already been in use as the official language in the administration of the Malay states. The idea of establishing a university using the Malay could only be realized on 18th May 1970 when YB En. Mohd. Khir Johari as Minister of Education at the time, had officially declared the establishment of the National University of Malaysia. The national language is not just to be recognized as a mere tool to impart knowledge or a medium of communication; rather, its status and importance should be recognized within the context of its role in the building of a Malaysian nation.
