Motoring sports made headlines in Malaysia on September 7, 1968, when the first Grand Prix was held at the motoring circuit in Batu 3, Jalan Kelang, Selangor.Preparations for the Grand Prix event started with the construction of the circuit at Sungai Renggam at Batu Tiga in Shah Alam. The building of the circuit was significant in the development of motoring sports in our country as it was a means of cultivating interest in the sport among the people. The foundation stone for the circuit was laid by the Sultan of Selangor, DYMM Sultan Salahuddin Abdul Aziz Shah Ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Hisamuddin Alam Shah on August 29, 1967. The first Grand Prix in the country was organised at a cost of almost RM 150,000. It was sponsored by the Malaysian Motoring Sports Club. The Grand Prix, held for two days, involved motorcycles and cars. It attracted 180 local and overseas participants for both these categories. The success of the first Malaysia Grand Prix proved the ability of our country in organizing the world tournament for motor sports. Although the circuit was closed in 1977, Malaysia continued her success with the opening of the Sepang Circuits.
