Operation Daoyai-Musnah was a combined military operation between Malaysia and the Thailand government to address terrorist threats from the Communist Party of Malaya or CPM whose hideout was in southern Thailand. This operation was launched on January 14th 1977 under the leadership of Prime Minister Dato ' Hussein Onn and with the consent of Prime Minister Thanin Kraivichien of Thailand. Operation Daoyai-Musnah was aimed at eliminating communist terrorist bases and hideouts around the Malaysia - Thai border areas, including Padang Besar and Wang Kelian in Perlis, Jeli and Sungai Golok in Kelantan. The Malaysian contingent under the command of Major-General Dato Osman bin Mohd Zain. Operation Daoyai-Musnah was successful in destroying the communist bases and hideouts. It was terminated on April 19th 1977, only to be followed by a second mission to track the remnants of the communists in the area. The operation was code named Operation Daoyai-Musnah II. Malaysia and Thailand continued with their border cooperation when Operation Cahaya Bena I was launched on July 4, 1977 in Betong, Thailand, followed by Operation Cahaya Bena II, launched on July 7, 1977 in Weng, Thailand. Malaysia and Thailand continued their cooperation in addressing issues and cross-border problems.The cooperation strengthened diplomatic relations, thereby contributing to peace, stability and security of both the countries and the Asian region as a whole.
