A Secondary School for the Blind opened in April 1974 in Setapak, Kuala Lumpur. The school came to be known as the Secondary School for Special Education (of the visually impaired). This was the first school to be set up in Malaysia and Brunei to cater to visually impaired students. The setting up of this school is in keeping with the Education Act 1961 which stipulates equal right to education in schools for students with learning differences. The founding of this special education school demonstrates the government’s commitment to providing fair and equal educational opportunities to all strata of society.
