On 1st January 1990, the Visit Malaysia Year campaign was officially launched at Dataran Merdeka by the Prime Minister, Dato’ Seri Dr. Mahathir Mohamad. This was the first such campaign to be launched by the government and its theme was “Fascinating Malaysia: Year of Festivals”. It was aimed at attracting local and foreign tourists. Kuala Lumpur’s landmark The Sultan Abdul Samad building was featured as the Visit Malaysia Year 1990 logo. The Orang Utan was used as a mascot to introduce Malaysia to the outside world, and it was named Wira. The campaign was a huge success with Malaysia charting 7.4 million in tourist arrivals, Tourist earnings amounted to RM4.5 billion, double that of the previous year.
