January 1, 1982 is an important date in Malaysia’s history, as it was on this date that Malaysian standard time came to be introduced for the whole of Malaysia. The proposal to adopt Malaysian standard time had been mooted by the then Prime Minister of Malaysia, Dato’ Seri Dr. Mahathir Mohamad, who also tabled the Bill in the Dewan Rakyat or Lower House of the Malaysian Parliament , seconded by Minister of Science, Technology and Environment, Tan Sri Ong Kee Hui. The Bill was passed by the Dewan Rakyat on 21st December 1981. Malaysian Standard Time came into effect on 1st of January 1982 through the passing of the Malaysia Standard Time Act. On 31st December 1981, at the New Year countdown event, the minute hand of the clock at the Selangor State Secretariat building was pushed half an hour forward to midnight. The adoption of East Malaysia standard time resulted in “daylight saving” for West Malaysia. The standardization of time was well in line with international standard which allows not more than one hour time variation between one time zone and the next. The enforcement of standard time for Malaysia had given positive effects towards the effort for the unity between the East Malaysia and Sabah and Sarawak. The new official time of Malaysia also develop dexterous and productivity to our country.
