Malaysia embarked on aerospace exploration with the launching of its first satellite known as the Malaysia East Asia Satellite, in short, MEASAT. MEASAT-1 was launched on 13 January 1996 followed by MEASAT-2 on 13 November 1996 from the Guiana Space Center in Kourou, French Guiana, in South America. The series of successes with the MEASAT geostationary satellite has placed Malaysia among the top three countries in commercial satellite communications industry in the Asia Pacific region. MEASAT satellite service has improved communication links throughout the country and abroad as well as bridged the digital and information divide between city dwellers and rural folk.
