Malaysia is the first Asian country to have hosted the Commonwealth Games, whose 16th edition was held from 11th to 21st September 1998 at the National Sports Complex in Bukit Jalil. The logo for the Games was the hibiscus flower designed in the shape of the number 98, indicating the year of the Games. The Orang Utan, given the name ‘Wira’, was used as the mascot for the event. The Tournament is held quartennially, and the 16th Commonwealth Games was the last to be held before the end of the millennium. There were 15 categories of sporting events involving 5,065 athletes from 70 countries. The 16th Commonwealth Games were witnessed capabilities Malaysia’s in hosting a major international sports event.
